Objective

For Natura 2000 sites and other protected areas, there is still a lack of adequate protection regimes that consider the functional connectivity of the Posidonia-beach-dune system and effectively implement management measures. Posbemed 2 overall aim is to manage the Mediterranean coastline by developing planning strategies that recognize the value of the Posidonia-beach-dune environment, ensure high level conservation for priority sites (PAs), and to integrate these results as part of an overall coastal zone management strategy, while also addressing concerns and educating stakeholders. It is based on the use of ecosystem-based management as nature based solutions to ensure sustainable development and the integrity of the coastal zone, taking into consideration the land-sea interactions where Posidonia meadows and banquettes develop as a parameter in planning processes and procedures. Further, it addresses the programme’s objective by enhancing the resilience of this particular vulnerable ecosystem to climate change in PAs, testing the building of a framework and a set of tools for providing a strategic model of integrated governance, with a particular link to touristic activities associated with the conservation of this natural asset.
